I-9 Class, Type A1

Boats: I-9, I-10, I-11
Length 372.8 feet
Armament: 18 torpedoes, 6 TT fwd, 14cm cannon, seaplane
(X)

Developed from the Type J3 submarine design with the hangar opening forward of the conning tower, the 3 submarines were completed from 1941 to 1942. Equipped with communications gear, they operated as command ships for groups of submarines.

I-51 Class, Type KD1
Boats: I-51
Length 300.0 feet
Armament: 22 torpedoes, 6 TT fwd, 2 TT aft, 12cm cannon
(X)

Prototype for the large I-boats (KD2 to KD7 types) which followed, this submarine design was based on the German U-139 from the First World War. Completed in 1924, I-51 had a double hull and was a submarine that was fast enough to operate with the battle fleet.

I-52 (renamed I-152) Class, Type KD2
Boats: I-52 (renamed I-152)
Length 330.7 feet
Armament: 16 torpedoes, 6 TT fwd, 2 TT aft, 12cm + 7.6cm guns
(X)

This submarine design was based on Germany's U-139 from WWI circa. She was employed as a training submarine until mid-1942, then stricken from service. Five additional units were canceled. This boat should not be confused with a later larger boat which was also called I-52.

 I-56 Class, Type KD3
Boats: I-53, I-54, I-55, I-56, I-57, I-58, I-59, I-60, I-63
Length 330.0 feet
Armament: 16 torpedoes, 6 TT fwd, 2 TT aft, 12cm cannon
(X)

Large double-hull submarines completed 1927 to 1930, they derived from the previous KD1 and KD2 types. This type is actually composed of two slightly different classes - KD3A and KD3B, the latter being 16 inches longer than stated due to a different bow shape.

I-68 Class, Type KD-6
Boats: I-68, I-69, I-70, I-71, I-72, I-73, I-74, I-75
Length 343.5 feet
Armament: 14 torpedoes, 4 TT fwd, 2 TT, 10cm cannon
(X)

Completed 1934 to 1938, these submarines had the highest surface speed of any submarines in the world at the time, although their speed was surpassed slightly by later Japanese submarine designs. The submarines were quite successful, sinking several capital US warships.

I-400 Class, Sen Toku Type

Boats: I-400, I-401, and I-402
Length 400.3 feet
Armament: 20 torps, 8 TT fwd, 14cm cannon, 4 AA, 3 seaplanes
(H)

Three times the displacement of ordinary submarines, the three boats were completed 1944 - 1945. With enough fuel to go around the world one-and-a-half times, they housed three aircraft. Each airplane was capable of delivering a 1,700 pound bomb a distance of 650 miles.
