The mission of the newly re-designed San Antonio Class is to embark, transport and land elements of a Marine Landing Force in an assault by helicopters or tilt rotor aircraft; conventional or air cushion landing craft; and amphibious or expeditionary fighting vehicles.

The twelve ships of the LPD-17 Class program will replace three classes of amphibious ships that have reached the end of their service life and one class that has already been retired thereby replacing a total of 41 ships. Currently 5 ships are commissioned, 4 are under construction, and 3 more planned.

The replaced classes are:
LPD-4 Austin class of 12 transport dock ships,
LSD-36 Anchorage class of 5 dock landing ships,
LST-1179 Newport class of 20 tank landing ships.
The retired class is:
LKA-113 Charleston class of 4 amphibious cargo ships.
