Amphibious Assault Ships are designed to maintain
what the Marine Corps calls "tactical integrity" - getting a balanced
force to the same place at the same time.
The Iwo Jima Class (LPH) of Amphibious Assault Ships were designed to transport fully-equipped Marines
into combat areas and land them by helicopter at designated inland points. The ships were capable
of supporting a 1700 person Marine Battalion Landing Team, its armament, vehicles, equipment
and a reinforced squadron of transport helicopters and various support personnel. The ships
also supported mine sweeping operations and provided humanitarian assistance and evacuations
of citizens caught in civil-conflict overseas.
