Amphibious Assault Ships are designed to maintain
what the Marine Corps calls "tactical integrity" - getting a balanced
force to the same place at the same time.
The primary war-fighting mission of the Tarawa Class (LHA)is to land and sustain US Marines during
hostilities. The ships serve as the centerpiece of a multi-ship Amphibious Readiness Group (ARG)
composed of approximately 5,000 personnel. Each ship carries one LCAC hovercraft.
